Biography

Jorge Pereira obtained the Engineering and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal in 1983 and 1987, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering-Systems from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, in 1993.

He has been with the European Commission since September 1996, initially as Scientific Officer, becoming Principal Scientific Officer in 2005. He has remained in the same DG, dealing with ICT, covering a broad variety of areas, with a focus on networking, devices, applications and services, experimentation, testing and validation, as well as deployment. He is, since 2016, in the area of Future Connectivity Systems, focusing on 5G and beyond, where he is responsible for the areas of Advanced Spectrum Management; optical-wireless convergence; Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM); and Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR).

He is a member of the Advisory Board of John Wiley’s Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Journal, and of the Editorial Board of Kluwer Academic Publishers’ Wireless Personal Communications Journal.

He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer in Portugal and a Member of the IEEE, where he is Associate Editor for Mobile Radio, including Vehicular Communications, for the IEEE VTS Magazine, and a member of the IEEE 5G Summit Steering Committee of the IEEE Communications Society. He also served as Associate Editor of the ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks

Heinz Bernold is a Partner & Director at Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He is a core member of BCG's Technology, Media and Telecommunication practice area and advises telecommunications & technology firms and investors on digital infrastructure, AI & digital@network, and digital business strategy. He leads the 5G and 6G topics for BCG worldwide. Heinz has over twenty years of combined industry and management consulting experience in technology, media, and telecommunications. Before re-joining BCG, Heinz worked at Swisscom as Head of Strategy & Innovation, responsible for Network, IT & Wholesale business.

Dr. Eusebiu Catana is Senior Consultant for the EU &public funding, ALICE vice-chairman for Physical Internet, member of the DTLF steering committee, founder of the FENIX2.0 cross-border data sharing association and the chairman of the ISO/TC 204 sWG 17.2 on Nomadic Devices in ITS Systems. He holds a PHD in Vehicle Telematics, Master Degrees in Engineering, Operations Research and post graduate master in Industrial Management as well as Project Management Professional (PMP)® and CISA certifications. Before joining ERTICO in March 2017 as Senior Consultant for Innovation and advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, he has previously worked as a Technical Consultant in R&D for about 25 years at top technology companies in both Europe and the USA In 2002 in Munich he was awarded with the “best award for ITS project development platform” from the IT industry. In 2023 he was awarded in Brussels with the “Innovative Award” 2023 for the innovation in transport and logistics from the transport industry and with the “ICTStand 2023 award” for contribution to standards development from the European Commission. Dr. Catana, along with his team, was also successful in securing more than 20 projects (totalling over 320 million Euros) in the last years in the fields of 5G, B5G, IoT, and Edge-related projects.

Biography

Regius Professor of Electronic Engineering and Professor of Mobile and Satellite Communications, Founder and Director of the 5/6G Innovation Centre (5/6GIC) and Director of the Institute for Communication Systems, University of Surrey.

Regius Professor Tafazolli is distinguished for his outstanding contribution to strategic research and development in future mobile and wireless communications including areas such as ad hoc networking, novel mobile architectures, massive MIMO, Green Communications and the Internet of Things (IoT). He is the inventor of the NOMA technique for Mass connectivity in 5G and Beyond 5G.

In Europe he pioneered clean slate research on Future Internet called “post-IP” era Internet. He is renowned for establishing the world’s first 5G Innovation Centre at Surrey University, which has galvanised national and international interest and funding for next generation mobile communications.

Bernard Duval is a technology transformation management consultant focusing on 5G disruptive technologies. He manages several collaborative research projects between industry and universities as part of the ENCQOR project, Canada's first pre-commercial 5G digital infrastructure corridor. The project is intended to make 5G networks accessible to Canadian businesses, researchers and universities, helping them realize its potential, promoting long-term economic growth within Canada’s innovation ecosystem.

With over 20 years of managerial and advising experience in the information technology, e-commerce and communication sectors, Bernard focuses on negotiating and building partnerships, thereby bringing a business agreement or an innovation project to fruition.

Mischa Dohler is now VP Emerging Technologies at Ericsson Inc. in Silicon Valley, working on cutting-edge topics of 6G, Metaverse, XR, Quantum and Blockchain. He serves on the Spectrum Advisory Board of Ofcom, and served on the Technical Advisory Committee of the FCC. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); and a Distinguished Member of Harvard Square Leaders Excellence. He is a serial entrepreneur with 5 companies; composer & pianist with 5 albums on Spotify/iTunes; and fluent in several languages. He has had ample coverage by national and international press and media, and is featured on Amazon Prime. He is a frequent keynote, panel and tutorial speaker, and has received numerous awards. He has pioneered several research fields, contributed to numerous wireless broadband, IoT/M2M and cyber security standards, holds a dozen patents, organized and chaired numerous conferences, was the Editor-in-Chief of two journals, has more than 300 highly-cited publications, and authored several books. He is a Top-1% Cited Innovator across all science fields globally. He was Professor in Wireless Communications at King’s College London and Director of the Centre for Telecommunications Research from 2013-2021, driving cross-disciplinary research and innovation in technology, sciences and arts. He is the Cofounder and former CTO of the IoT-pioneering company Worldsensing; cofounder and former CTO of the AI-driven satellite company SiriusInsight.AI, and cofounder of the sustainability company Movingbeans. He also worked as a Senior Researcher at Orange/France Telecom from 2005-2008.

As the widespread deployment of 5G continues, there is an on-going focus on the inception of the sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication systems (WCSs). Anticipated to shape the future of connectivity in the 2030s, 6G aims to deliver unparalleled communication services to meet the demands of hyper-connectivity.
While densely populated urban areas have traditionally been the primary beneficiaries of WCS advancements, the vision for 6G transcends city limits. Aligned with the United Nations' sustainability goals for 2030, an important aspect of 6G endeavors to democratize the benefits of ICT, fostering global connectivity sustainably. This talk delves into this particular envisioned landscape of 6G, providing insights into the future of wireless communication and guiding research efforts towards sustainable, inclusive, and high-speed connectivity solutions for the future. Central to this discussion are two emerging technologies: Free Space Optics (FSO) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). These innovative solutions hold the promise of extending high-speed connectivity beyond urban hubs to underserved regions, fostering digital inclusivity and contributing to the development of remote areas. Biography

Mohamed-Slim Alouini was born in Tunis, Tunisia. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1998. He served as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota then in the Texas A&M University at Qatar before joining in 2009 the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) where he is now the Al-Khawarizmi Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Prof. Alouini is a Fellow of the IEEE and OPTICA (Formerly the Optical Society of America (OSA)). He is currently particularly interested in addressing the technical challenges associated with the uneven distribution, access to, and use of information and communication technologies in rural, low-income, disaster, and/or hard-to-reach areas.

Mohamed Essaaidi (Senior Member, IEEE) is the General Manager of the Moroccan School of Engineering Sciences (EMSI) Group, General Manager (Since January 2023), Chief of Party of Interactive Digital Center Morocco (Morocco’s XR training and innovation center, since November 2020) and a Professor and Past Dean of ENSIAS School of Computer Science of Mohammed V University, Rabat, Morocco (2011–2019), Past Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of General Affairs & amp; Governance, Morocco (2019), and past faculty member Science of Abdelmalek Essaadi University, Tetuan, Morocco (1993–2011). He is the founder and past Chairperson of the IEEE Morocco section (2005–2016), co-founder and chair of several IEEE OU in Morocco during the last two decades, including, IEEE ComSoc / Computer Society Morocco Chapter / IEEE Education Society Morocco Chapter / IEEE AP-S/MTT-S Morocco Chapter. He is IEEE IoT Global Cities Alliance, MEA Chairperson (2021–2022), IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Programs Committee Chair and IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Activities (SIGHT), Global Chair (since January 2023), IEEE EAB Teaching Excellence Editorial Hub, Member (2021–2022), and IEEE Public Safety Technology, Education Chair (2022). He is also a member of IEEE SA P2784 Smart Cities Planning and Technology Guide WG. He has authored and coauthored ten books and more than 200 papers in international refereed journals and conferences, in addition he filed ten patents, in the field of Electrical and Computer engineering and its diverse applications. In addition, he is the founder and the General Chair / co-chair of several IEEE technically sponsored international conferences such as Information and Communication Technologies International Symposium (2005, 2007), NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Information Security Assurance (2005), International Conference of Multimedia Computing and Systems series (2009–2016). He also co-organized and co-chaired IEEE Smart Cities Summit in May 2020, the US National Academies 5th Arab American Science, Engineering and Medicine Frontiers Symposium in November 2017, Rabat, Morocco and US NSF sponsored workshop on Smart Cities in January 2016 in Rabat, Morocco. He has also served in the Organizing committees and TPC and presented keynote talks at many other international conferences worldwide..
